Current Protest Songs

There are many bands today that still create protest music. NOFX, who usually do songs with juvenile themes, made a change for their 2003 release "The War on Errorism". The main focus of the CD is sociopolitical songs, although quite a few protest things within the punk music scene rather than the larger spectrum.

A common theme is protesting how commercialized music itself has become. Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution was in and of itself a protest of sorts - the band was formed entirely by volunteers, who made a 5 song EP that they released with handmade covers and made very little money from it. The entire EP is now available for download at their site. It's A Wonderful Life is an anti-war song as well. The frontman of BotAR is Tomas Kalnoky, former lead singer of Catch 22 and now the lead singer of Streetlight Manifesto, both ska bands. Tsunami Bomb also protested commercialization of music with Top 40 Hit on their debut CD "The Ultimate Escape".

The 'Rock Against Bush' CD compilations have also come out recently.

Some current bands who have made protest songs are Choking Victim, Against All Authority, Atom and His Package, Mad Caddies, the God Awfuls, the Suicide Machines, and Anti-Flag.

Idiots Are Taking Over - NOFX

It's not the right time to be sober
Now the idiots have taken over
Spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?

Mensa membership conceding
Tell me why and how are all the stupid people breeding
Watson, it's really elementary
The industrial revolution
Has flipped a ***** on evolution
The benevolent and wise are being thwarted, ostracized, what a bummer
The world keeps getting dumber
Insensitivity is standard and faith is being fancied over reason

Darwin's rollin over in his coffin
The fittest are surviving much less often
Now everything seems to be reversing, and it's worsening
Someone flopped a steamer in the gene pool
Now angry mob mentality's no longer the exception, it's the rule
And I'm starting to feel a lot like Charlton Heston
Stranded on a primate planet
Apes and orangutans that ran it to the ground
With generals and the armies that obeyed them
Followers following fables
Philosophies that enable them to rule without regard

There's no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated
Political scientists get the same one vote as some Arkansas inbred
Majority rule, don't work in mental institutions
Sometimes the smallest softest voice carries the grand biggest solutions

What are we left with?
A nation of God-fearing pregnant nationalists
Who feel it's their duty to populate the homeland
Pass on traditions
How to get ahead religions
And prosperity via simpelton culture

The idiots are takin over

Top 40 Hit - Tsunami Bomb

They're making you what you are:
Soldiers with no brains
You think (you think) you have a choice
(You don't) Money chooses for you

You play the role
Follow the herd
You play the role
Remote controlled
They scoop it up, shove it down your throat
And you swallow...
You play the role

They have their hands over your ears
You'll never hear the sounds that matter
Brainwashed by repetition
(They open your mind) with a soldering gun

Don't let them tell you what to like
Don't let them tell you what to buy
You see (you hear) what they decide;
Your radio (has got to die)!

500 Channels - Choking Victim

500 Channels
500 channels of a day-dream stimulation
helps me to resent my life and raise my expectations.
Locked into re-runs, your memories repeating,
and all your ideals seem so self defeating.
For you and yours, the pepsi generation,
and when you're discontent, you change the T.V. station,
And when you hate your life, no qualtities redeeming,
a million brainwashed zombies will always be heard screaming...

And when there is no hope,
"I'll smoke some crack, I'll shoot some dope!"
When theres no enemies,
"I sit and stare at my T.V.
and in my ignorance,
I'll be a slave and sycophant!"

And in a perfect world devoid of all temptations,
the good leftover crizack could unite the nations.
But now the war machines are mapping our destructions
with poisons over flowing in the chemical seductions.

And when there is no hope,
"I'll smoke some crack, I'll shoot some dope!"
When theres no enemies,
"I sit and stare at my T.V.
and in my ignorance,
I'll be a slave and sycophant!"

With my credit and my bank,
my mind will draw a blank.
I'll block out history,
and stare at my T.V.
For me there is no way.
500 channels waste my life away, away...
